Without an extension it’s only for one year!
What’s with all the WANT to trade away the farm for a position they don’t NEED to address, especially when it’s a one year rental? Sure, if they could get an extension signed right away then it could pan out to be an improvement at shortstop. However, shortstop is certainly the one position the Mets really do not need to address.
With players like Andrés Giménez (great defense, decent bat, big upside, years of control and super affordable) and the highly touted prospect Ronny Mauricio (not to mention Amed Rosario), the Mets shouldn’t be thinking about moving on from them.
Francisco Lindor is absolutely an improvement, but who’s to say Giménez and Mauricio won’t blossom into players of similar caliber. If history has proved anything to the Mets it’s that if they were to trade them away it would be an almost certainty that would happen!
And with so many other glowing needs on the team (pitching, catching and a true center fielder) why would anyone consider addressing a position with so much depth before addressing those needs?
