Brewery Banter - Source Brewing

Source Farmhouse Brewery, Colts Neck, NJ

As many of you that have heard our Craft Beer Podcast may have already figured out, I drink a lot of Source Farmhouse Brewery beer. This is not a difficult thing to do (well, for me anyway) as Source is only about a 15 minute drive away. Plus, they release new beer every Friday.

So, on Friday mornings at about 9am I log in to my Beer Broadcast account and purchase the newest creations from the crew in Colts Neck, NJ. Yes, a fair amount of the offerings are indeed New England IPAs (NEIPAs), but there are a good number of other styles from time to time as well, mostly seasonally.

For instance, a couple of weeks ago my purchase consisted of “Warm Embrace”, a 7.5% American Porter, and “Fall Saison”, a 9.1% Farmhouse Saison. And just last week I picked up “Colts Bock”, a Single Bock brewed with Heirloom Corn. I haven’t gotten to these as of the writing of this article, but I will definitely report back once I do. Who knows, one of them may wind up on a podcast.

I was originally thinking of making this “column” reviews on specific beers, but I decided that may turn this into another version of my Untappd profile. Instead, I’ll be combining multiple beers from the same brewery into one article. If anyone really wants to know my full thoughts on specific beers, just write in and I will give you my Untappd info. 🍻

So, here we go…

Pictured above are -

Watch Me Whip 2 - 7%ABV New England IPA - Source’s second take on a new emerging sub-style of NEIPAs dubbed “Oat Whip” IPAs. The mouthfeel is insanely pillow soft, with tons of juice. This was the second release in this series.

Never Forget - 8%ABV Double New England IPA - A hazy, juicy Imperial NEIPA with a soft body from the wheat & oats used. Nice tropical fruit with some citrus and dank pine as well. This beer was released on September 11th. 🇺🇸

Orange Tangie - 7.8%ABV Milkshake IPA - Oats & wheat lend a soft mouthfeel, while the Mandarin oranges, tangerines, vanilla and milk sugar blend to create an old time summer treat! My favorite of Source’s Milkshakes I’ve had so far.

SoCal Westy - 7.4%ABV West Coast Style IPA - Citrus and dank pine over a solid malt base make this a great West Coast version. A nice interlude from the “juicier” New Englands! Missing this style lately. Solid effort!

Pia Colada - 7.8%ABV Double Milkshake IPA - Tons of pineapple, banana and coconut along with the vanilla and milk sugar make this super reminiscent of a Piña Colada cocktail.

Help>Slip>Hazy - 9%ABV Double New England IPA - Tropical fruits and berries, balanced with a soft mouthfeel make this beer dangerous, as you have no idea it’s 9% while you’re drinking it! So good! Part of Source’s “Artist Series”, paying respects to artists, musicians and others. This one pays tribute to The Grateful Dead.

Ultra Simcoe - 8%ABV Double New England IPA - Part of Source’s “Singe Silo Series”, where they feature one hop. Simcoe is one of my all time favorite hops, and the pine that shines through the juice giving the fruit a bit of dankness to play with makes this an instant favorite of mine!

Watch Me Whip 1 - 7%ABV New England IPA - Source’s first take on a new emerging sub-style of NEIPAs dubbed “Oat Whip” IPAs. The mouthfeel is insanely pillow soft in this one as well, with ripe mango and citrus. This was the first release in this series.

Iron Musk - 9%ABV Double New England IPA - A soft mouthfeel with big flavor. Tropical and citrus flavors with a bit of pine and subtly tart way in the background. This beer was brewed as a tribute to Elon Musk.

Ambrosia Milkshake - 7.8%ABV Double Milkshake IPA - Similar in body and style to their Pia Colada milkshake, but without the banana and a bit more coconut. It really does taste like Ambrosia would taste if it were a beer. Well, it is now!

Lil Cal Pale Ale - 4.5%ABV Pale Ale - A low calorie American Pale Ale. Light bodied with citrus and pine, and a slightly dank, dry finish. Think of it as a “West Coast Light”. A perfect stop gap between bigger beers.

Tropical Milkshake - 6.5%ABV Milkshake IPA - Super tropical with guava, papaya and mango with a soft, creamy mouthfeel. Think of sitting on the beach on an island sipping a creamy tropical drink out of a coconut!

El Hefe - 5.6%ABV Hefeweizen - A citrusy banana and clove explosion. Very crisp and clean. Immediately refreshing. I could drink these all day!

Source Of Hoppiness - 6.5%ABV New England IPA - One of the first Source beers I ever had, shortly after they opened. Hazy and juicy with citrus, berries and stone fruit. Yeah, I was hooked at first sip.

So, in a nutshell, I find their beer to be well brewed, the recipes to be spot on and the rotation of styles to still be somewhat varied in this age of NEIPAs. Oh, and their NEIPAs are some of the best ones that I have ever had!

If you ever find yourself in the area of Colts Neck, NJ, go and enjoy some great beer!
